Cost analysis

Glasses

Good quality progressive glasses cost around €300, and including the price of the frames can cost as much as €800. Be aware! Furthermore, if you are very fashion conscious these costs can increase again as glasses are a fashion sensitive product and it is likely that you will change your glasses every 2 year according to the change in your vision.

Lenses

Their cost increases depending on their complexity: they are more expensive for presbyopia than for a simple default like myopia. The average annual cost is around €600 for lenses and associated cleaning products. You must also consider the cost of the check-ups with your contactologist which are not covered by the national health or social security.

Intraocular lens implants

The estimated cost is between €4000 and €5000 for both eyes. This price includes the intervention itself, clinic expenses, surgeon's fees as well as the cost of the actual implants. In the case of cataracts there is some remuneration available through Social Security and/or your health insurance.

PresbiViz

Laser correction of presbyopia costs between €3000 and €3500 for both eyes; this includes all associated exams, the intervention itself and 3 months of post operative care and check-ups. The cost of a PresbiViz operation therefore pays for itself after 5years when compared to the cost of glasses or lenses.

Claiming on your health insurance

Each time you change your glasses to increase the necessary optical correction, your health insurance company is obliged to top up the small or non-existent amount supplied by the Social Security.

Consequently, lots of insurance companies make it their interest to fund a part of the cost of the surgery.
It is therefore a good idea to ask your health insurance company the amount that will be reimbursed so you can calculate the cost to you of surgery.

The majority of patients can benefit from the correction of their presbyopia with PresbiViz laser surgery, however there are some contraindications.

Contraindications for PresbiViz surgery:

corneal anomaly (form, thickness)
myopia below - 8
hypermetropia above + 5
cataracts even in the early stages

For these patients another surgical method is available.

Certain people are not suitable for either option: patients experiencing poor vision, unilateral or bilateral, which cannot be improved with glasses. This poor vision can be from birth or acquired (through illness, traumatism).

I am myopic, astigmatic and presbyopic, can I be operated on?

Yes, where the defaults are associated with the presbyopia an intervention could correct them all. A detailed study of your personal parameters would need to be conducted at first.

Will I still need glasses ?

No, in your daily life you will no longer need to wear glasses. However in certain circumstances you might be more comfortable with glasses for example: prolonged reading of a book, sewing…..especially in poor light.

My daughter has had surgery to correct her myopia, would it be the same method for me

Yes the sequence of events for the operation and after care are identical.

What are the precautions you must take before the intervention ?

If your surgery is planned for the afternoon or evening can you work beforehand. After Lasik, there is no need to disrupt your professional occupation during the following days. If your intervention is planned for the morning, it is advisable to return home afterwards.

Avoid high consumption of alcohol.

It is not permitted to wear makeup and all makeup should be removed 24 hours before the intervention.

What precautions should I take after the intervention ?

Do not do activities that could traumatise or bruise the eye (sport, playing with children, DIY…).

Avoid putting water or soap in your eyes whilst in the bathroom on the evening of you surgery.

Instead apply your prescribed eye drops at regular intervals. Do not rub your eyes and in the case of irritation apply hydration lubricant eye drops, which are the only real way to calm the discomfort.

You should wear your protective eye shells (provided) during the night for the first week and in the case of sunlight sensitivity it is recommended that you wear sunglasses outside.

Can I be confident of the result announced by the surgeon ?

Yes but it is important to know that in the case of an imperfect result further surgery may be required to optimise vision.

Are there any risks with this operation ?

The risks are rare thanks to the method and the experience of the surgeon. In fact we would estimate that the risks of the operation are no higher than the risks of wearing lenses.

There are various centres equipped with the complete Zeiss platform in different regions of France and in the world.

An ophthalmologic consultation by one of the surgeons must first be conducted to study the patient in question; this will ensure that the correct procedure is chosen to correct the presbyopia.
